Biotechnology is contributing significantly to the economy of India. It is estimated that the biotechnology sector in India by 2017 will achieve revenue of US $ 11.6 billion. Biotechnology in India is based on a network of nearly three hundred national laboratories and about an equal number of universities. The Department of Biotechnology under the Ministry of Science and Technology was set up in 1986 by theGovernment of India.

The Indian biotechnology sector is presently divided into five segments which are bio-pharmaceuticals, bio-services, bio-agriculture, bio-industrial and bio-informatics.South Biotech hubs such as Bangalore in Karnataka and Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh, represents the biggest hub for biotech companies
